The idea is to create extra place for maps. Package of maps. Extra maps which quality is better than other maps.
Why I'm thinking about it?
There is a "maps" part in the Widelands Homepage menu, but when you enter there, you can see only some of the maps. Some of them are quite good, other needs to be improved. Some of them are just tests. If you want to find exact map, you are opening even 10 pages till you find the exact map you were looking for (try to find clavission map: https://wl.widelands.org/maps/calvisson/)
Most of the maps are not connected to the release or dev version. Also it is good to test seafaring on new maps.
I was installing Widelands on new computer and it is hard to remember all the maps I used to play. Also current web browsers don't ask you where do you want to save the file (IE probably does, but Firefox doesn't). Every time I have to open one folder, then second, copy- paste- delete files. It is quite lots of work.
My idea is to create a package that you can download easily and you do only one copy-paste with unpacking files in exact folder.
The package should contain maps that are good to play or to see. Which maps it should be? I was thinking about recommendations: you can recommend a map that isn't yours. I can't recommend my map (f.e. Wideworld; https://wl.widelands.org/maps/wideworld/), but I can recommend TiborB's maps (f.e. https://wl.widelands.org/maps/spider-lake-v3/).
More maps = more fun! :)
What do you think about that feature?

Who decides which map is better than another?

No Backup?
Also current web browsers don't ask you where do you want to save the file (IE probably does, but Firefox doesn't).
Here on firefox 34.0.5 it works. Maybe you have to adjust your browser settings?

I don't know... recommendations (The Rating?) are rare and depends on personal taste. But a Filter like "number of players", "Mapsize" or "Seafaring" would be nice.

try to find clavission map
When you know the name, you can simply use the search function.
I agree that it would be cool to be able to filter the maps by different attributes (also by combinations).
Currently, the most recent uploaded map appears first in the list. It would be nice if one could change the order to "best map first". But this would require that we have many votes, which is not the case.
Furthermore, it would be nice if someone could go through the section and delete test maps and maps where a newer version is available. This would reduce the amount of pages, too.

Or if:
- there was a versioning system on place there, that would recognize that this is a new version of existing map
- alternatively, if author could delete own maps

I think there is no need for such package to be "official" package. We can just provide some place on website for a trusted person to put there such zip of maps selected by him. Plus little disclaimer
I can imagine for such package to be packed as separate "data extension" pack in repositories of linux distributions.

So probably my idea= my responsibility :P
I will choose some of the maps I know/ think they are interesting and provide small web page like Tino
Any suggestions about what maps you think they are good?
Hope I will do it this week

As I told, I created "small" package Only ~50 maps over ~100 (all maps from the site). It is on a www site. The site is very similar to Tino's page (very simple and precise).

Hi everyone!
I've finished site with widelands maps packages. There are several packages (different goals for maps), search engine and all the stuff around it.
http://wuatek.no-ip.org/~rak/widelands/
If you see that there is any mistake, just tell me. Also if you want to add any other map or delete anything from packages, I'm open to it
Also there is one more thing to add: The site is on a old server, which has bad connection. So if anyone has some space on well-connected server and offer me to move the site, I will be glad to hear that.

After few months of technical problems on the server (this is not my server, so generally waiting), I have finally reopened the site.

Map packages are available again
