+1 for both of these.

If we add some new official maps, some old maps should be removed.

I disagree. Having a wide variety of maps that are known to work is very helpful for new players or even those who play offline. It's frustrating sometimes to have to sift through unknown maps when short on time and wanting to just dive into a game.

Another suggestion: 4 Player Tasmanian black war. A challenging map, imho.

I will try to sum this up:

Mapname Nr players seafaring comment
Forest Valley Tournament version 2 yes Some port spaces should be removed to prevent ai building ports at not usable places
Plateau (Tournament) 2 yes
Rocky Mountains v3 3 no
Tasmanian black war 4 yes Challenging map with historical background
The Wood 4 no From year 2011
Egyptian Mandala v.1.2 6 yes Enabled port spaces again
Terra v.1 7 yes Guaranteed long play time
The island of the eight tribes 8 yes long playtime
Amoebae 8 no
Accurate Europe v1.1 12 yes Should replace Europe 1.2

So all in all 10 new maps, if all are ok. Currently the amount of shipped maps is 53. With this new maps there will be 63 maps.

Although some people don't want to remove some old maps, i also think, like Nordfriese, that there shouldn't be too many. From my point of view this maps can be removed:

  • 4 player: Elven Forest; Too much wood one has to cut to get in action
  • 6 Player: Twinkling waves
  • 4 player: Rendez-vous

I will provide a branch with the new/removed maps if there is consensus about them.

+1 for removing Elven Forests and Twinkling Waves. But I vote to keep Rendez-Vous.

What's so wrong with Elven Forests that both of you want to remove it?

Actually it's the only "open" map of the official ones, so it should definitely not be removed, at least until more and better "open" maps are added.

We should really assess the maps based on multiple criteria before removing anything, and ideally, we should aim for a diverse and well balanced set with additions too.

What do you mean with "open"?

Playing Elven Forest is a bit boring, because you have to cut a huge amount of trees before you get in contact with any other player. Because of that this map also doesn't work well for multiplayer games.

What is the deadline for providing a branch with new maps? Saturday, the 23rd of March 2024?

Yes, we should merge the branch ready on Saturday so we can merge it on Sunday at the latest as the last change before the Winter Time Freeze begins.

What do you mean with "open"?

An open map is a map that wraps around on all sides, instead of being de facto an island bordered by water or lava (like the Europe maps or Checkmate). But we have enough other open maps IMHO, such as Lake of Tranquility, Golden Peninsula, Three Warriors, Escher, Fellowships, Last Survivors, Four Mountains, Astoria, Nile … need I go on? face-smile.png

I mean that the wraparound of the map works in all directions on land, and there are no choke points and no natural defense lines. I think at least the-x uses this term for this kind of map.

That leaves very little time for testing fixes for maps that need them. This topic got restarted a bit too late. face-sad.png

An open map is a map that wraps around on all sides, instead of being de facto an island bordered by water or lava (like the Europe maps or Checkmate). But we have enough other open maps IMHO, such as

These all fail my other criteria, with the exception of Four Mountains.

Lake of Tranquility,

The lake and mountains still form a large diagonal separator, and the swamps also limit the use of the horizontal wraparound. Plus it is possible to cut off the other player from a large part of the mountain by building a fortress early. IMO this is the kind of problem that we shouldn't allow in official maps.

Golden Peninsula, Three Warriors,

Lots of chokepoints and natural barriers.

Escher, Fellowships,

Very limited contact with very few and very narrow chokepoints.

Last Survivors,

Almost, but the natural barriers are quite big.

Four Mountains,

Yes. (though the mountains give a bit too much defence)

Astoria,

??? It's all large islands.

Nile

Large natural barriers, so you can only build along some lines. Also, a large part of the map is completely inaccessible. Certainly not something I'd call open.
