Forest Valley Tournament version | 2 | yes | Some port spaces should be removed to prevent ai building ports at not usable places

Here's an edited version that makes the whole river navigable by removing the fords near the starting positions.

Thanks face-smile.png

I think your criteria are a bit too harsh. Forest Valley didn't met your criteria also, if i understand correctly, because lots of natural barriers and one (or two) choke points. And i guess most of the currently shipped maps doesn't met your criteria.

In the end it's all about personal taste. Personally i start playing a map without looking at it in the editor first and discover the map with each military site. So with my style of playing it is not important for me if the map is "open" or has chokepoints or natural barriers. More important for me is the look and feel during discovering.

They only describe a style that's not well provided by the official maps.

Having another look, you may be right. It's probably not as open as it looks at first sight.

That's kind of the point. face-smile.png We should have official maps for as many game styles as possible, to serve as many tastes (and moods) as possible.

I've looked at all of them in the editor, and I don't think we should add any of them at this point. Let's concentrate on the ones already in the PR, because we have very little time until the hard freeze.

The starting positions on Rocky Mountains are very uneven.

The Wood only needs testing, but it's a large and slow map.

Terra has at least one serious problem with the ambiguous port spaces at Panama. The gold distribution looks strange too.

I think we can rely on the comments to the maps and trust the players face-smile.png

Just noticed that the AI doesn't work well with the map Plateau … Probably because coal spots are not easy to reach.

And I've just realised what evil trick that map plays on players. You have to conquer the mineable fields around the island from inside, but you have to build long roads on the outside to be able to mine them. Clever, but very evil, especially for the poor AI, who will never figure this out. This must be mentioned in the hint at the least, but we better don't set such examples in official maps, so either the map is fixed, or we shouldn't add it after all. Could be fixed by opening some passes through the snow barrier or by adding port spaces all around the island. Or maybe both. But then these would change the character of the map too much. So I really don't know.

Plateau: I think we can have it as official map. Although the ai does not perform very well, a player can testplay this map and may find it very useful for multiplayer.

At community: Any suggestions for other maps?

As I see it, few replacement may make the official maps better. I think replacement of the current Europe with the Accurate Europe would be a good change. I would definitely recommend it .

I also think that we have many better maps to replace Elven Forests (the map is not aesthetic, there is an inaccessible mountain with gold and the map isn't special in any aspect). I played your map Mountain Labyrinth recently and I enjoyed the game. I think this would be a really nice new official map.

Next map I would suggest for replacement is Golden Peninsula (the map has a bad layout, there is no way any player can reach the resources on the peninsula before the end of the game and this hardly accessible peninsula makes the map very small). In this case, I would suggest The Rush as a new map. The map just need some story to it because there is none yet.

I also created a new version of "River Explorers" map posted here. The map is not so challenging. I almost doubled the big building spaces and add some resources. But it is nicer and AI likes it more now. You can make it more challenging by yourself by starting with basic outpost or poor hamlet.

Maybe someone else may suggest also another maps to be replaced too, but I didn't play all of them. I played approximately half of the official maps. All replaced maps should be available through addon with former official maps so there is no reason why the current maps should not be replaced when there are better maps now. The whole game is changing constantly (new tribes, seafaring) so the maps should go with it from my point of view.

And as for other maps I also like the maps of Solstice. I just find the New Zealand better than Tasmania. As for Terra v.1, I agree with tothxa. I played one game on this map and I liked it, but the distribution of gold may be better. In South America Amazons got stuck because of trees.
