The story is that Daniel Webster (of dictionary fame) decided to "upgrade" American English by getting rid of all the "illogical" spellings. So while the rest of the Commonwealth spells it colour the US does not.

Yet... the US still hasn't gone metric. LOL.

Maybe they haven't figured out that the world doesn't revolve around them, However, I have heard of Daniel Webster and his crusade, it was quiet the joke when I was in my highschool english class about 47 years ago, but we aussies also have our quirks like using 'galah' ( which is a type of parrot ) to describe a person who is ether a fool or
is acting foolish. There are others I could qoute, so I guess spelling colour as color isn't so bad, it just seems a lazy way to me

Funny thing is that serious Americans (in science or the military) have switched to metric. Now I dunno how it's in Oz but in the Great White North our grocery stores STILL sell stuff by the pound (fruits/veg/meat) at least in the flyer ads. I think it's because the number is half what it would be in kilos and thus looks cheaper! <rolls eyes>

In Australia, we're mostly metric, but there are some hold-outs ( us crusty old buggers can still work in both ), however, across the ditch, the kiwi's are all metric AFAIK
Also, in the depth burned south, most African countries use metric and imperial, at least that's the way it was a couple of years ago when my daughter was last there/
As for looking cheaper, what's cheap ? The cost of life is horrendous, at least down in this wide brown land ( and those pesky 2
islands to the south east, commonly called New Zealand) <wink>

Canada has a lot of hold outs. Funny, just read a question on FB by my local radio station and most of the replies were favouring the old system. Today is 50 years since Canada officially switched to metric. Myself I use both and since I'm a WW2 buff I will always need ye olden miles and pounds. The Brits for example had 2, 6, 17 and 25 pounder guns.

No nothing's cheap, and thanks to Trump it's all getting more expensive everywhere.

Naughty, Naughty mxb2001, you've upset Nordfriese , but I digress, I never did get the idea of the 'pounds' monetary system, but I can and do sometimes work in miles. As to guns, I'm not sure what we australians used in WW2, I was born in the swinging sixties
and not the best history student.
You can't really blame one group for the worlds woes, but if I did , I'd start south of the border.
Our south eastern neighbors ( i hate american spelling - firefox doesnt't understand australian ),
complain regularly about us , but they still come over because it's cheaper than kiwi land.
I know a couple who think we are the cause of their woes , but when I pointed out the fact that the problem is world wide, they changed their tune.
Still , playing widelands and discovering new things about it makes life bearable.

Heh, I guess it was the bodily excreta word. Didn't realize we weren't supposed to use "vulgar" language here. I do hope though that it was not an attempt to censor a reference to Mr. Trump. (there's another one) That'd be a big problem... As for the pounds and shillings and pence and half pence... yikes. : ) As a history buff in general I've tried to grasp it. Almost seems as if they made it as complicated as they could though. Brrr. The Australian forces were mainly equipped with British gear. There was a Australian made plane I am familiar with though. Called the Wirraway during WW2 IIRC. Ah yes the 60's also my birth decade.

Spell check? You can turn that off in FF (which I also use) or you can also configure the language to use. I know they have at least a British English dictionary. In fact I had downloaded a Canadian English one once. Realized I wasn't using it so I removed it. Look under addons for Firefox, lotsa awesome stuff there.

Funny to hear about how you guys relate to NZ. Sounds pretty much like the former US-Canada teasing we used to have fun with in the old days.

Using vulgar language is in my opinion frowned upon but not necessarily prohibited. And while any real-world political discussion is very much off-topic here, and political opinions shall not pertain to Widelands, it is also not forbidden per se, regardless of what kind of political opinions are being stated.
What absolutely does not go is applying vulgar insults to people – again, regardless of any and all political opinions.

Finally, just to be sure, a disclaimer to everyone reading this: Widelands is not political, and this shall not be construed to indicate any political viewpoints of the Widelands project or the Widelands Development Team.

Nordfriese, For my part I apologise, I got a bit carried away. The one thing I try never to do is use vulgar language.
As to politics, you are correct, and whilst I don't use social media, I should not air my views here.I will also state that the Widelands
forum, development team or any user of any of forum should not be held accountable for anything here. This got carried away a bit too far so I will keep my posts in this or any widelands forum strictly game orientated from now on.

Having said the above, I originally started this as a place where we could share stories about the silly ways we have either won or lost.
I hope that we can keep to this idea.

Actually I've never lost in a funny way. : ) It's always an agony and involves a lot of shouting and swearing.
