Patience young padawan, the force will show you the right way, if it does not, 'Force, use more you must ' face-smile.png Actually, I got smoked by a 16 year old on saturday playing on the Too Rocky map, overconfident I was , and she
showed me the error of being too cocky by sneaking up and taking out my HQ when I wasn't watchiing.
Even old timers get it wrong sometimes.

Heh, I'm an awful WL player. Stupidly I even know what my problem is: I don't build enough. Decades of playing Civ, Col, Moo, Mom and other 4X's has ingrained in me that you can only build 1 of each type of building! I suppose what helps a bit is when I play on a big map and have "regions" that I can build up as separate "cities". Then my old brain allows me to build dups (after all every Civ city has a barracks and a temple and a marketplace...). Worse yet is that from Civ I'm used to the idea that buildings are EXPENSIVE. My god they are so cheap in WL I can hardly fathom it.

Oddly though it's how "weird" WL is to me that keeps me coming back to it.

Hmmm... 16 year olds beatin' ya, eh? Yer brains need more vegemite, mate! ; )

yeah, with that 16 y.o you might be right, but she is smart, really smart. As a warcraft, starcraft and the like player, I'm used to building a lot of buildings, with WL, I start out building 2 quarries, 3 wood cutters, when thier done, I build 1 metal workshop, 2 axe workshops and 1 helmsmith THEN i start on the rest of my economy.
Normally , about halfway through the game, I can have a lot of farms, wood cutters and mines running with multiple taverns , inns etc
going. I am used to building a lot of support for large militaaries, so WL is actually a boon as it doesnt seem to have an upper limit
on soldiers, of which I normally have a LOt by games end, not to mention OXes, Steaks, anyone ?

Another mistake I make is I'm always building stuff only after it's needed. I see a shortage, track it down and then reluctantly build another building (AAAUUUUGH, no not a second furnace, that just seems wrong ; ).

A different economy game I've played and enjoyed is called Imperialism. It has a different way to expand production than WL, you expand the single and only factory (in your capital city) over and over as you get more resources. Somehow I manage that better. It is a much simpler system than WL for sure. Only 3 types of raw material (wood, coal/steel and wool/cotton) to work into various end products in the 3 factories. Getting the materials to the capital from your colonies can be tricky if they are overseas. You can also trade with the others.

Would be interesting maybe if a WL tribe had endlessly upgradeable buildings. Nah, wouldn't work, the traffic for a giant (1000's of coal) charcoal burner would kill it I guess. Imperialism didn't have a limit on internal ware transport only that which needed to be traded from foreign sources.

Oh well WL is interesting to me, albeit frustrating. I guess it is pretty amazing that I've actually won a few WL games vs the computer.

Oh yeah, mostly same for me face-grin.png It takes a lot of effort to check the stock regularly, especially if the enemy is nearby or you are already in a battle. At startup the order when to build which building is easy, after playing several games. Later in a game it get sometimes difficult to accomplish running a smooth economy and you will sooner or later have shortages of this and that ware. Especially on maps with limited building spaces this can get hard. Since i play Empire, i have mostly trouble to get enough wheat later in a game. And sometimes having 6 Farms work well, sometimes you need 10 or more …

6 Farms ? You're doing well, I often have 30+ farms and still run into shortages, mostly due to clogged roads.
Not to mention timber, coal and iron which always runs short even if I max ou production. This all comes from being
greedy with 100+ soldiers and support I suppose. As I normally play as the Barbarians, their reliance on timber can really slow
you down.

Yeah, part of the fun of WL is the bailing out of a leaky rowboat style it brings. Wouldn't be much of a game if it all ran smoothly once you have it setup!

As regards numbers of farms or anything I'd think that's gonna vary based on map size.

Funny that you guys have a preferred tribe. The ones I seem to like most are the Amazons because they're weird and different but I try to play different tribes as much as possible. I always set the scenario to random tribes for all sides, even when they come pre-set for some reason (unless I can tell there was some good reason). Some old scenarios strangely preset all tribes to barbs. Variety is the spice of life! I greatly enjoy having to mentally jump to adapt to the current tribe in each new game. On top of that I enjoy playing several games in parallel because that forces even more mental agility. Yes, strange things I do to keep myself amused...
