I don't actually build a large economy at once, just enough to start mining with a small amount of mines, then start tool manufacturing and simple weapon making. Training and the like I normally leave to later, but if I can I start producing soldiers ( though I wont say how many here ) and get some defensive structures up, Once I'm satisfied that the basic economy is running smooth and soldier production is fast enough, I can then switch to my editor and do some work. Remember that message's give an audible sound when they come in and i will have a quick look to see what needs to be done.If it isn.t important at the moment, I'll leave it for a while. But I never let my message box fill up too far. That makes managing the game easier and more efficient. You don't want 30 messages to deal with while you're trying to do something else, so I keep them trimmed down. Getting towards the end of the game I switch my attention to it an start planning my overall strategy to win it. My way probably won't work for most people, but against the AI and my family, my way works quiet well. Even if the AI is at 'NORMAL' it doesnt normally pose a threat for quiet some time on most maps. And the added bonus for me is that my wife ( and to a lesser extent my kids) aren't the experienced RTS players as I am. So most times I get some breathing space early in the game.

The aussies are coming, ya ho! ya ho!
