If it didn't happen once in a while, then the RNG would be broken. See the 1000000 threads on the Battle for Wesnoth forums on the subject. Busy indexing nil values

By the way, what would happen if we would lose the match? How would the second phase of the tournament look like? Wanted to save the world, then I got widetracked

no idea. i hate to put effort into things that are unlikely to come up, so i did not plan for the chance that you would not win. (actually, i did think on it, but i assumed that if we somehow manage to win our match, then we'd win the tournament. losing to niEKTORy changed that. then again, it's still most likely that you would win)
